Hydroelectric pumped storage projects allow the efficient storage of electrical energy by typically pumping the water to an upper reservoir when (low-cost) surplus electricity is available, and subsequently releases the water back to a lower reservoir through a turbine mainly when the marginal cost of electricity generation is high. Moreover, pumped storage hydropower is a flexible resource that contributes to balance supply and demand in the power grid and helps to integrate variable renewable energy sources like wind and solar.

The hydropower project is located on the northern slope of the Wadi Al-Mujib, in the area of the already existing Mujib dam and Wadi Al-Mujib reservoir. The project extents just from the north border of the reservoir up to the northern plateau of the surrounding highlands at an elevation between approximately 170masl and 770masl.

The project can be connected to the 400kV OHL between Qatranah - Amman west stations, the length of the grid connection is around 10km.

The project aims to prepare a detailed techno-economic feasibility study and a clear business model for the envisaged pumped storage project at Al-Mujib Dam.
